Champions League: Fiorentina Women to face Manchester City

Fiorentina will take on the English side in the Round of 16

16 February 2021

Fiorentina Women have been drawn against Manchester City in the UEFA Women's Champions League Round of 16 following the draw in Nyon on Tuesday.

The first leg will take place in Manchester on 3/4 March, with the second leg to follow in Florence on 10/11 March.

"Being involved at this stage of the competition shows that we've done great things to earn the right to take on some of the best clubs in the world," said Antonio Cincotta after the draw. "We've had a tough few months in terms of our squad, but we'll give everything we have and draw on the motivation and pride that comes from playing in the Champions League."

Tessel Middag – a former Man City player – also shared her reaction to the draw.

"Manchester City are a very good side with world-class players," she said. "We knew we were going to be up against a top club and this is definitely a very difficult tie for us. On a personal note, it will be nice to go back to Manchester, where I played for two years. I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces."

It will be the third time Fiorentina have come up against English opposition in the UWCL knock-out stages: the Viola exited at the Round of 16 stage at the hands of Chelsea in the 2018/19 season (after a 1-0 defeat in London and a 6-0 loss at home), while Arsenal knocked Cincotta's side out at the Round of 32 stage last year following 4-0 (home) and 2-0 (away) defeats.

Manchester City currently sit second in the Women's Super League table, behind Chelsea.
