First Team

Italiano, Biraghi and Milenkovic address the media

06 June 2023

On the eve of the Europa Conference League final between Fiorentina and West Ham, coach Vincenzo Italiano, captain Cristiano Biraghi and Nikola Milenkovic spoke to the media in a press conference.

Here’s what the boss had to say:

FREEDOM – We want to play with a clear mind and perform at our best tomorrow. As for the Coppa Italia final in Rome, we can now call on that experience. The key is staying focused throughout.

CASTROVILLI – He hasn’t made a full recovery from the bruising and he’s unavailable for the game tomorrow.

ITALIAN SIDES IN FINALS – It was a shame not to see Roma lift the trophy in the first European final involving an Italian team. Now it’s down to us to compete in a really tough final and then it’ll be Inter’s turn. Having three Italian sides in finals is testament to the development of Italian football and it’s something for us to be proud of.

EMOTIONS – I try to put them to one side to be able to lead the team as well as I can with a clear head. We’re here to go for it with an incredible team and a club that has been working so hard since putting faith in me two years ago.

REDKNAPP – I’m pleased to hear what he had to say about our style of play. We’ll try to stick closely to our footballing philosophy tomorrow.

LINE-UP – I still have a few selection doubts about tomorrow. As for [Arthur] Cabral or [Luka] Jovic, it doesn’t change much for me as they’re players who’ll give their all and have been working hard with the team for a long time. They could also play together, possibly as an option during the game.

RICE AND PAQUETA – One is a quality centre-midfielder. The other mixes it up all over the pitch and we also saw him play in Italy a few years ago. They are a top-level side and they know what they’re doing on the pitch. Rice will get into midfield duels with [Sofyan] Amrabat and we hope Sofyan will come out on top in that part of the pitch.

PENALTIES – Everyone in the squad has taken penalties in recent training sessions because it could come down to that in the final. Maybe it’s only the goalkeepers who haven’t tried taking them.

PRAGUE – We’ve all got to this final together with our fans following us everywhere we’ve gone., We’ve also managed to win in intimidating atmospheres along the way. The whole of Florence is with us for the final and every Florentine will be helping us get the ball in the net.

Cristiano Biraghi:

SQUAD – I’ve always tried to protect the squad, be it defending us from pressure or getting out of difficult moments as quickly as possible. It won’t be easy tomorrow to unlock the door, but we’re a strong side and we’ll play our cards in order to prize it open.

FINAL – It’s certainly one of the most important games of my career. If we win, it will have an even more special taste to it. Not many players have managed to bring a trophy back to Florence.

PRE-MATCH TEAM TALK – There’s a mix of emotions that could make me lost for words. The match prepares itself. I don’t think I need to prepare a special speech.

FIESOLE – I’m so pleased about the relationship with the supporters. The situation has been turned on its head going back to the beginning, so I’m happy about that. To think that some fans made it to Sivas or Riga in midweek with all the difficulties linked to work is quite something. That’s why we have to take to the pitch to give even more and overcome any feelings of fatigue. We’ll give so much that we might not even be able to walk back to the dressing room. That’s all I can say.

EXPERIENCE – We’ll take our approach from the final in Rome into the game tomorrow, along with our performance but not the result. We understood that a mistake in a final is ten times more serious than in a normal game.

Nikola Milenkovic:

VIOLA – I’ve developed as a man and as a player during my six years in Florence. I always give my all and I have to thank our fantastic fans. We’ll push as much as we can.

CAREER – Signing my contract renewal was a nod to this team’s footballing philosophy and the club’s potential. The coach’s ambitions have made me improve further and we’ve achieved our goals by showing togetherness.

SEASON – I’ve had to battle against a few injuries that I’d never previously had before this season, but I’m now fully fit.

JOVIC – I think he’s doing really well. He’s hungry and I’m pleased for him because he has huge potential. I know he can help us out tomorrow.
